The seventh episode of Top of the World for 2017 is a very special live recording from the first Songwriters in the Round event held at Leadbelly in Newtown on Wednesday July 12, 2017. Curated by Taryn La Fauci and inspired by the Bluebird Cafe, Lady Lyon, Leroy Lee and James Morrison all took to the stage to share stories, songs and collaborate on each other’s music.
This double episode is an intimate, fun and candid conversation between artists who were so generous in sharing how they write, why they write and where their journey’s have taken them so far. Each artist also performed three originals songs, a song that has influenced them so far by an artist they admire and also a Bob Dylan collaboration between all four artists to finish the night.
Enchanting songsmith and acoustic guitarist, Leroy Lee creates intimate and hypnotic lamp-lit tunes, drawing the listener into his unique world. From driving guitar riffs to intricate finger-picking melodies, Leroy is reminiscent of English folk legends like Nick Drake and Bert Jansch. Named Triple J’s “Unearthed” winner in 2007 Leroy has toured with Glen Hansard (The Swell Season), Missy Higgins, Lisa-Marie Presley, Lior, Folk Uke, Steve Poltz, Kaki King, Lisa Mitchell and Jeff Lang. Festival appearances include: Woodford Folk Festival, Peats Ridge, Queenscliff Music Festival and Cygnet and The National Folk Festivals.
Currently recording her debut EP, Lady Lyon belongs on stage in a grand old theatre, singing tales of heartbreak where the audience can nestle down into their red cushioned seats, and sit quietly in the pitch breathing in that voice, those words and her atmosphere. Lady Lyon has shared the stage with Mia Dyson, Tom Stephens, Marlis, Royal Tennyson, The Widow Birds, Luke Wellington, Ainsley Farrell, Elizabeth Hughes and Men from Earth.
James Morrison is one part of The Morrisons, a band of peerless pickers: musicians possessed of ancient and unsleeping fire tempered and refined by conservatory education and grown warm and nourishing with closeness. The Morrisons have appeared at Port Fairy Folk Festival, The National, Out On The Weekend, Secret Garden, Blue Mountains Music Festival, and have supported Lake Street Dive, Lindi Ortega, and Marlon Williams. Their own Man of Constant Sorrow: A Tribute to the Music of O Brother, Where Art Thou? showcase has sold out two years in a row, receiving marquee billing at the 2016 Spectrum Now and Vivid Festivals and featuring performances from Sydney mainstays including Ngaiire, All Our Exes Live In Texas and Brian Campeau. On top of which, The Morrisons have long enjoyed regular rotation on both ABC Radio and Sydney tastemakers FBi. (Gareth Hipwell, 2017)
